Tips for Winterizing Your Pool in Tucson

Although many parts of Arizona don’t see harsh winter weather, it’s still best to winterize your pool whether you live in Tucson or Flagstaff. If you won’t be using your pool over the winter, closing it for the season and taking care of winter pool maintenance tasks will ensure it’s ready to use in the spring or summer. At Cimarron Circle Construction, we specialize in custom swimming pool design and installation as well as basic and routine pool care and pool cleaning services. Here are our tips for winterizing your pool in Tucson, AZ, and throughout southern Arizona.

The Importance of Winter Pool Maintenance

Even if you don’t want to winterize your pool because it’s heated and you plan to use it throughout the winter, you should still take care of some key winter pool maintenance tasks. Seasonal pool maintenance will ensure your pool’s water is at the optimal level and its chemicals are carefully balanced. You will also reduce your risk of algae and mold growth and damage to pool equipment. However, keep in mind that your pool’s pH levels will rise quickly in the colder weather, and even more quickly if you continue to use your pool, so your pool will require chemical testing and treatment more often.

When Should You Winterize a Pool in Arizona?

We recommend winterizing your pool when you’re done using it for the season, or about a week before your area goes below 40 degrees overnight. In general, that means November or December. If you wait too long, your winter pool maintenance checklist might be more extensive or complicated.

Essential Pool Winterization Steps

How do you winterize a pool in Arizona? Here are our tips:

  • Test your pool’s chemical levels and balance your chemicals properly so the water’s pH is between 7.4-7.6 and its alkalinity is between 80 ppm and 120 ppm. The chlorine levels should be between 2-3 ppm and the calcium levels should be between 175-225 ppm.
  • Schedule a deep pool cleaning appointment or clean your pool thoroughly yourself. Scrub down the walls and surfaces with a pool brush and use a vacuum on all surfaces. Skim the pool to remove debris. Empty and clean the pool filters.
  • Next, lower the water level using a siphon pump. The water level should be about six inches below your skimmers.
  • Schedule a plumbing line purge to prevent the plumbing lines from freezing.
  • Clean the pool pump and skimmer.
  • Clean and store all pool accessories.
  • Install your winter pool cover.
